Mikyo Butler’s Commentary on the Company Vision and Culture
We are a small family business, and, while we do want to grow, there are elements of “small” and “family” that we never want to lose. For us, “family” isn’t about working with blood relations but rather about building a team of people who share a long-term vision and embrace the sense that our company and our personal identities are inseparable. We go against the grain of the labor market trend towards replaceability and overspecialization. We think the best way to serve human beings and families navigating the emotionally-charged terrain of personal finance over a period of decades is to be humans first, and credentialed experts second. Though the latter is important, the former is indispensable, irreplaceable, and consistently in short supply. Similarly, “small” simply means we will never grow at a pace that endangers our ability to deliver this kind of personal human attunement and the long-term continuity. We could easily imagine growing AUM several-fold and hiring up to 7-10 additional people over the next couple of decades, so we are not opposed to the idea of growth; rather, we are committed to staying small enough to retain the following characteristics:
- Every team member knows every other team member very well.
- Every team member touches every part of the business to at least some extent.
- Every team member feels a genuine sense of ownership for the direction of their role and the company as a whole.
- Every person who joins the team finds the idea of eventually becoming an owner appealing, if not compelling; of course, partnership may not be right for everyone, but a sincere interest in potential future ownership at the outset is key.
- Every member of the team knows every client’s name. This probably inherently limits us to something like 300 client families, and we’re okay with that!
- We will always remain structured as a partnership to keep ownership within the company and incentivize partners according to the long-term fundamentals of our business (and not the ebbs and flows of the company’s valuation). We have little interest in ever being acquired, and no interest in ever going public.
